Letter to Democrats, Jan. 23, 2003

Terence R. McAuliffe
Chairman
Democratic National Committee
430 South Capitol Street, SE
Washington DC 20003

Dear Mr. McAuliffe,

I received your request that I renew my membership in the DNC.

I haven't renewed my membership because I'm not convinced that the Democratic Party represents me. Most Democrats currently in office aren't acting like Democrats — most of them are acting like Republicans. The Democratic Party doesn't appear to be acting as an opposition party. In fact, it seems to be going out of its way to become the Republican Party.

When the Democratic Party decides to differentiate itself from the Republican Party — when it stands firmly opposed to an unnecessary war against Iraq and is willing to take risks in order to speak out against it — when it insists that the President tell the truth about his real reasons for wanting war with Iraq, which most likely are concerned with oil and/or with actions the President's father wanted to take while in office — when it represents the growing anti-war sentiment in this country and works with our country's allies to avoid war — when it refuses to let the President distract the country's attention from our very real economic problems at home — then I will consider renewing my membership in the DNC.

Sincerely,

Alyce Barry
