Zbigniew Brzezinski's Four-Point Plan For Ending The Iraq War

Former National Security Advisor Zbigniew Brzezinski appeared on PBS's News Hour on Monday, March 20, 2006, and spoke of a four-point plan to leaving Iraq in about a year's time. It seems a very sensible plan from a man who's been an expert on Middle East affairs for thirty years.

1. Ask the Iraqi government to ask us to leave. Some, Brzezinski noted, have already asked us to leave.

2. Agree with the Iraqi government on the date of our departure so that it's a joint decision, probably about a year from now.

3. The Iraqi government convenes a conference of its Muslim neighbors, who are interested in stability in Iraq, and asks for their help in avoiding civil war.

4. Arrange a donors' conference for the recovery of Iraq.

THE COSTS OF WAR

Brzezinski also stated in a concise and compelling way the terrible costs of this war:

  • We have undermined our international legitimacy, which is a high cost for a superpower.

  • We have destroyed our credibility -- "no one believes anything the President says any more."

  • We have tarnished our morality with Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo.

  • American blood (in dead and injured the figure stands at nearly 20,000)

  • Money (the cost of the war stands at more than $400 billion, which could more wisely have been spent here)

  • Iraqi blood (in dead the figure stands at between 30,000 and 100,000, and that does not include the injured)
"Staying for a prolonged period of time, for some ephemeral victory, is not the solution." -- Zbigniew Brzezinski
